It's all about Pancakes....

This year I have forgone the lemon & sugar and opted for lashings of maple syrup New York style..... well I am a New York girl at heart....

My nan made the best pancakes ever, so it is always with a heavy heart that I whisk my pancakes, remembering all the great times that I spent with her tugging on her apron strings... The four grandchildren sitting round the kitchen table, devouring stacks of pancakes before they even came out of the frying pan!...
Yum yum.... What have you having on yours?......

Tools to Bake....

As recently blogged, baking has over the last few years for me, been a solace for dealing with bereavement and loss, however over the last year I lost my mojo and haven't baked for a while. This has been for a number of reasons some personal and some just through lack of time...
My baking kit has been with for at least 20 years and is a little tired and some items needed replacing, so how surprised was I to see this gorgeous Christmas baking box full of fabulous goodies from Mich Turners little venice cake company range under my tree at Christmas (my friend had taken note some months ago of me saying that i needed to update by baking kit!).....

I was fortunate to have lunch with Mich a couple of years ago where she talked about the range and how excited she was for the collection so ts great to see it developed..The range is extensive and all pieces can be purchased individually, so I think I will be adding to the collection!...

Designed in Mich's distinctive style, I love the black white & pink styling... Which goes lovely with my Tcake apron & my recent free gift from the Cake & Bake show ... so inspired by my new kit & apron I baked this weekend!.... Coffee & Caramel cupcakes.... mmmm...

Looking forward to the Cake & Bake show later this year....

Cupcake treats...

It's been a while since I've blogged any cupcake treats, so here's a few recent finds and some cupcake treats from Christmas... Starting with the recent first, Primark (I can hear my friend clapping her hands together with glee, as I loath the shop! And the thought that I may have then been carting a brown bag around after said purchasing will have her chuckling lots!).. I love a jumble sale, but this seems to be the premise of Primarks store standards and I hate it,
But rant aside I did find some cupcake treats... Gift bags, cake stand and tea towels. (apologies for the non-ironed tea towel!).. The big cupcake bag was great for the gift bag of cupcake treats for my nieces 9th birthday... Along with her main present of some clothes & a game. I pulled together a cupcake goodie bag, complete with cupcake mix, Mary Berrys cupcake book, and some of the fabulous Emily Button cupcake craft treats from M&S ....

Next are a few treats from Christmas... I love a gadget so was really excited to see a cupcake pop maker & cupcake maker.. Have yet to try either but will keep you posted... Also in my cupcake stocking I got a copy of the fabulous Lola's cupcake cook book, some new cupcake spoons, mug & hot water bottle ( which has been much used in recent weeks during the cold spell!) and a gorgeous cupcake bakery cookie tin...

Loss of an icon...

Saddened to wake up to the death of Whitney Houston, a true icon and legend of my generation.

For all her troubles she still and will remain one of the most groundbreaking female artists ever... An artist consistently emulated by others.
Saving all my Love remains one of my favourite 5 songs, and can still 30 years on give me goose bumps...
Saving all my love .... Whitney classic
and a goose bump moment at the American Super bowl... No one has sung this better....

RIP Whitney... Thankyou for an amazing gift...

Books to Eat & Bake

Having compiled my reading wish list for 2012, I then became distracted compiling my Baking Books to Eat list!... I am some what obsessed with baking books, and always have a pile languishing on the bedside cabinet to read before sleep.. Complete with post it's and notes attached.
So far on my pre-order list are:-

  • Sweet Designs ~ Amy Atlas if this book is anywhere near as good and stylish as her blog it will be a cakemakers/ crafters dream..
  • Tart it up ~  Eric Lanlard huge fan of Eric's, His cake boy eatery in Battersea is delicious as is his pastries, having sampled his champagne afternoon tea twice last year I am so looking forward to this .... lots! Also coming back this spring is his Baking mad series for channel 4
  • Boutique baking ~ Peggy Porschen... Anything with Peggy's name on is worth a look, the styling will be scrumptious along with the design. I'm loving the new styling on the cover, for any of you that have visited Peggy's parlour in Belgravia it looks just like that!
  • Miss Hopes Teatime Treats... The fact that Hope & Greenwood have written an afternoon tea book, makes me salivate just thinking about it... First sweets and now Teatime treats... Yum yum.. Think the styling will have lashings of ginger beer as an accompaniment.
  • Make,Bake & Celebrate ~ Annie Rigg... Frequently published in the Daily mail, Annie's recipes are delightful... Perfect launch for a celebratory year..
  • Popcorn treats ... This intrigued me, as I have been a popcorn junkie for many years and now is trendy for popcorn to be many flavours both savoury and sweet.. I'm a plan sweet girl myself, but I'm hoping this will inspire me to use my popcorn maker more!
Two cake pops books have also caught my eye... I'm a sucker for a girly cover!

And finally Saved by Cake by Marian Keyes. I've been a fan of Marion's chicklit for many years, so a foray into the baking realms intrigued me until I read this article recently .....cupcakes made life sweet again.
Where Marion talks about her battles with depression and how baking has helped her overcome this crippling illness. For someone that has battled with this myself over many years, her account is both brutally honest and exceptionally comforting, because you have no control of it. I think that's why I am such a control freak now, because when this illness strikes you loose all control and become very lost. There isn't one emotion that she describes in the article that I haven't felt over the last 10 years, and applaud her for being so vocal about it. I await with anticipation to read Marion's book... Happy Baking x
